The Rubell Museum: DC’s Contemporary Art Museum brings the Rubell Family’s extensive contemporary art collection to the nation’s capital. Opened in October 2022 and offering free admission for DC residents, the Museum further deepens the Rubells’ commitment to sharing their collection as a public resource, providing opportunities for local and traveling visitors to engage with today’s most compelling national and international artists. Housed in the historic 1906 building of the former Randall Junior High School, a historically Black public school in Southwest DC that ceased operations in 1978, the Museum invites viewers to consider the role of artists as teachers and what they can tell us about the world. The Museum’s exhibitions showcase artworks that provide insightful commentary on the most pressing issues facing today’s society, situating them within the context and setting where ideas are debated on the national stage.
The Rubell Museum’s collection is distinguished by its unprecedented range and depth that has enabled the Museum to organize over 50 exhibitions during the last three decades drawn entirely from its holdings in painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installation. These have included such groundbreaking and diverse exhibitions as Red Eye: Los Angeles Artists (2006), 30 Americans (2008), Against All Odds: Keith Haring (2008), Beg Borrow and Steal (2009), NO MAN’S LAND (2015), Purvis Young (2018), Yayoi Kusama (2020), and She Said, She Said: Contemporary Artists from the Rubell Museum (2024). Many of these exhibitions have toured to museums internationally and have been accompanied by published catalogues.
